in one of the grooviest tunes the Dead ever put to vinyl, Weir has somehow managed to suck that vibe completely out of this arrangement...the bass player looks like he's dead...everyone is too shy to tell Weir to kick it up a notch and quit with the half ass guitar work...

Love the way he puts his heart in to that commercial.

To me Eddie is like Huey Lewis and Greg Kihn. He's kind of cheesy, but he gets a pass with me because he's a longtime Bay Area resident. A transplanted homeboy, but homeboy nonetheless.

I was living in the Palo Alto/Berkley/Oakland in the late 70's and I saw and loved everyone of the above. God help me.

Hahaha!

How about we sit down after that admission. Don't you feel better? Do you want a glass of water?

If I may be so bold, when did you relocate? Are you happy you did? I stayed in Aiea for a month or so when I was loose and fancy free and liked it. Wish I had explored further. I'm still interested.

Oh. Long story. I spent 4 months in HI in 76/77 doing a solo bike cruise and acquired a huge HI jones. Then I lived in the Bay area for a couple of years. Then back to hometown LA for the 80s. Always visiting HI. Got married in 89 and my wife and I moved to Honolulu for a great adventure which lasted only six years and ended when we adopted our son. Since then, Seattle-bound. I still have a HI jones - just no money to soothe it. Hence the handle, I guess. Have a pretty good collection of HI music though which I still listen to often.

Aiea is a pretty local place as I recollect. More Pearl Harbor side. What brought you there hauli?

HI is a unique and strange place. Much love and beauty mixed with poverty and resentment. Pretty much sold it's soul to be like the good ole USA. You have to scratch beneath the surface to see the real HI.

I was actually there twice. The first time as a 14 year old w/ my family and then later by myself (kind of). My fathers best friends sister (got that) and her husband lived in Aiea. My first trip was a trip. The first day we got there I went outside to use their pool and the two guys they had hired to do some landscaping lit up a joint as casually as you please during their break. I had never seen so bold a smoke-break before! We did the whole tourist deal on that trip (and yes we went to every botanical garden on Oahu).

To your point about poverty and resentment, one afternoon we were swimming at Kalama Beach and a local and my father got into a fist fight b/c the guy said the beach was for locals and not white people (at least that is what he told the cops). It was kind of a scary deal as we were the only white people there and though only one guy got into fisticuffs with my Dad he had numerous friends. To be fair, my father had been drinking and had a permanent chip on his shoulders in those days and sadly fisticuffs were not a unique event in his life. The local probably said something he took exception to and instead of moving on and letting it be...

The second time was very different. In the middle of my time when I saw a lot of shows, ect.. No fist fights (far from it) but lots of smoke-breaks! It was on that trip that I fell in love w/ the island. I wished I scratched the surface much more then I did, but I was young and had a pretty sweet deal (nice and mellow place to stay and friends) so I wasn't overly adventurous (in that way ;-). Cost of living was/is high so save up those pennies...

You should definitely journey there again. There's that name again. It's definitely a heavy place and you have the jones for sure. And yes, the cost and education were the factors for leaving after our son came into our lives. Better to visit than live unless you've got a niche somehow or are rich.

Story: on my second bike trip in 1977 I spent two month circling Kauai and the Big Island. I flew from LAX to Hilo and headed towards the black sand beaches of Kalapana (now under yards of lava). Along the way, I stopped in a hippie town named Pahoa and met a really nice haole - a sociology Phd (trying to remember) refugee from the Bay area. He was now living on odd state jobs, unemployment, and growing pot in the hills (Puna Butter was that district's name.)Invited me to stay in his home, which I did for a few days. Took me all around. Turns out he was a big time Deadhead with a huge collection of tapes and a great stereo. What a fun time. His name was Dick Latvala. After I came back home we continued to correspond for a while. I would send him a box of Maxells and he would send back concerts and pot. $100 per oz was the rate at that time. He was a good wrapper! Lucky they didn't check the mail that well in those days. Anyway, lost track of him as time went on and then one day I bought a new Dead cd and, lo and behold, there was ole Dick listed in the credits as caterer. Well, I thought, that's an interesting life change. Who knew? :)

HF & DH: see, this is where I think my few yrs on you (didn't think that was so, DH?) gave me and my group a decidedly more cynical and snotty/snobby approach: having grown up there in the 50s & 60s, by the 70s we simply HATED anyone that came along in any form whatsoever that was "pop" (successful). The SF folks were successful, of course, but in a counterculture fashion.

I think we actually had MORE disdain for these folks, EM/Journey, even ones like Steely DAn (we saw all the members of that band playing in local clubs in the early 70s) that we knew had some talent...none of them represented the "real thing" (JA, QMS, DEAD, MGrape, etc); and worst of all, they had mainstream success--kiss of death for us.

Just different--back to the "we were special cause we liked an uncool (therefore the coolist, by defn) band".

I think "we" all see the appeal of art which is deemed too scary for the masses.....the(m) asses.

From rock n' roll to gangsta rap.....

BTW, this was my fave, because it was actually a cautionary tale and "they" didn't get it.

Anyway, our sell-outs were rap artist who went on MTV.

Absolutely; I had my first kid right about the dawn of MTV (that's when you really start to lose touch with hipness, eh? kids that is...).

aren't Sammy Hagar and "singing" mutually exclusive?

You may be right but it still sounds better than Bobby trying to sing Loose Lucy.
